Features

Moidart is characterised by habitats typical of the Highlands of Scotland along their western margins, with grass moorland and peat soils under the protection of special areas of conservation and habitat designations. Ancient woodland is a significant element of Moidart habitats, with plentiful evidence of post-glacial forest-cover of birch-pine forest and oak woods. The wider area is associated in meteorological records with the highest annual rainfall of the British Isles with totals of between 150 and 200 inches of rain per annum. Moidart includes a significant number of habitat and conservation designations including SSSI and SAC. In addition, Moidart and neighbouring Ardgour form a SPA for a significant population of breeding golden eagles.
